The hybrid figure is my metaphor for a male-female relationship. Opposite her stands a pelican—in Western culture it is considered a symbol of sacrifice (a parent cuts open its breast, feeding its hungry chicks with its own blood).
For me, the essence became shifting the male-female conflict onto a struggle with the very essence of the relationship, as I perceive it. I used a gaming aesthetic for this, because just as characters are constructed in a game, in my painting I perceive the modern model of relationships as an arbitrarily shaped construct.
My question in this painting is: who is the victim of this conflict? Has love itself not become its hostage?
